Banner Health is currently seeking an Associate Buyer to join the Purchasing Department.  This position is located in Chandler, AZ off the I-10 & Chandler Blvd.


The Corporate Supply Chain Services Purchasing Department provides support services to all Banner Health medical facilities. The Purchasing Team provides customer service, processes supply requests, maintains orders and does all follow up from the requisition stage of a supply request until the materials are delivered to the department and paid for by accounts payable.


Lawson experience is preferred.

Job Summary

This position is responsible for the timely and accurate ordering and purchasing of supplies for all assigned facilities. The incumbent works as a member of a centralized team to purchase goods in accordance with contract terms from specified vendors, to provide a high level of service to internal customers, to maintain good vendor relations, and to find new opportunities to reduce supply cost. Using specialized knowledge of procurement contracts and products ordered, the Associate Buyer maximizes purchases made under contract terms by 1) providing counsel to facility requisitioners; and 2) identifying new product needs for contract or bid negotiated pricing.


Essential Functions

  • Receives facility orders for routine and specialty supplies, and creates vendor purchase orders via Electronic Data Interface (EDI), telephone, internet, email and fax. Works with Support Staff to process orders.


  • Expedites open orders, provides customer service and works closely with departments and vendors to understand and meet their needs. Facilitates product substitutions on back ordered products; sources alternate products as needed.


  • Verifies pricing against contractual agreements and initiates action to resolve discrepancies. Works closely with Accounts Payable, Vendors and Departments to resolve discrepancies to insure timely payment of invoices.


  • Assists customers in preparing and processing supply purchases. Purchases materials, equipment, and services in accordance with policies and procedures and purchasing contracts, and acts as a knowledge resource for Banner Health contracts and Premier contracts where applicable.


  • Analyzes and evaluates product usage categories for savings, comparing contracted vendors. Calculates and documents savings on non-contracted items as appropriate. Identifies new opportunities for items on which to seek contract pricing.



Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge. Requires the math, verbal and written communications and business skills. Additional training in medical products procurement.

Requires three or more years of related experience in procurement and/or working with similar medical products supply. The work requires the ability to work under strict time constrains and to manage multiple priorities. The ability to solve problems and the teamworking skills to obtain assistance to resolve those more complex in nature are necessary. Effective interpersonal skills are required to interface with the broad range of customers and vendors. Must be able to interpret verbal and written information and instructions, have the ability to learn and comprehend basic contract language and legal issues of procurement, with the ability to formulate calculations and analyze results.

Must have intermediate word processing, spreadsheet and/or database software skills, with a basic working knowledge of Materials Management Information System(s).

Preferred Qualifications

A broad knowledge of medical products is preferred.
